During his time based at Reading with the R.F.C., William was bought up on charges at a General Court Martial at the Rifle Depot, Winchester on 16th August 1918.

The charge sheet of the Court Martial stated:

William pleaded NOT guilty to the charge.

A Lieutenant Colonel Taylor was the President of the court and two majors, together with six Captains, were members of the court. Another Captain was Judge Advocate and yet another Captain Fisher-Browne was the prosecutor. William had Mr. H. Lemon, Solicitor of Swindon, as his counsel. All was ready for the trial which William faced. Details of the Court Martial are in Appendix 5.0.
